THE AGE OF OAK (a.d. 1500^660)
The "age" periods are retrospective designations based on the furniture style ot the era and the wood selected for the design characteristic of the time. Designations changed with the changing centers of influence and were renamed for the species best suited to produce the furniture style, whether light or dark, carved or uncarved, highly figured or not, or whatever. The other "age" periods are Walnut (1660-1720), Mahogany (1720-1765), and Satinwood (1765-1806).
ENGLISH INFLUENCES
Italian Artisans—have tools, will travel! Louis XII (reigned 1498-1515) imported Italian artisans to France.
Henry VII (reigned 1495-1509) used Italian artisans in England as well, to work alongside English tradesmen, primarily for the Italians' contribution in ornamental detail.
Henry YIH's (reigned 1509-1547) split from the church expanded the markets of furniture craters previously dedicated to meeting the needs of the church, to a broader, secular populace. The pope and the people had to share.
FRENCH INFLUENCES
France was the site of two styles under the rule of Francis I (reigned 1515-1547) and Henry II (reigned 1547-1559). In 1522, Francis I extended the contract Louis XII had with the Italian artisans and employed their skills in remodeling the palace of Fontainebleau, which turned into a showcase of columns, scrolls, carved bands (to replicate tooled leather) and carved figures.
When Henry II entered the scene in 1547, he appreciated the carved figure work, but relegated the columns and arches below the case as legs, supports and other underpinnings, giving this version a lighter look. The heavier chest-on-chest design, however, was a product of this era.
