.Furniture Time Line
The rime line of furniture styles is presented here as a reminder ot when and where furniture styles originated, and reinforces the tact that there is very little new in our efforts of today-
Designs were, as is true today, an interpretation of experience and knowledge as a frame of reference (plans not included), a compilation ot what we like from the past, an expression of counter design in protest of something or someone or just to be different.
Sources differ on beginning and ending dates for furniture styles we group and classify into periods. Style changes were often a blend, a melding and adaptation of current and past efforts. Any attempt to isolate and bracket these periods is subject to interpretation, but the consensus and the time line show an ever-increasing level of activity with technological development and population growth.
This running narrative of the time line gives a broader review or the whose and where ot historical furniture. Style changes came about, in many instances, based only on a whim or personal agenda of those influencing the change. The same decree ot justification exists tor today's custom furniĀture maker to produce what is pleasing, even it only for a population of one.
Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome (3000 b.c.-a.d. 499)
Whatever is used as reference for today's furniture has gone through more recent renewal periods. Renewals of these ancient styles were the mainstay ol the Adam Brothers and the Empire styles.
Dar Ages to Middle Ages (a.d. 500-1199)
Somebody lost the recipe for fine furniture, and crude attempts were often gilded to cover the lack of craftsmanship. This was the era when a solitary-chest also served as a chair, table or bed. ROMANESQUE
This era represented the link between the fallen Roman Empire and the beginning of the Gothic style.
